The Legends 7-Day Writing Challenge

A schoolgirl once asked C.S. Lewis how to write. He answered with a list.

In December 1959, a schoolgirl in America wrote to Lewis for advice. He replied with remarkably practical rules: read good books, write with your ear, be clear, protect abandoned work, and know what your words mean. They weren’t lofty principles for “someday.” They were things a writer could do. We turned them into seven days of action—one for each letter of LEGENDS.

Built for writers who want momentum without another marathon

You don’t need a perfect routine, a finished outline, or hours of empty calendar. You need one useful action you can finish today.
This is for you if
Your attention disappears before you write.
You want a realistic way to protect creative energy without pretending the internet does not exist.
This is for you if
You keep second-guessing your prose.
You want practical ways to hear weak sentences, clarify meaning, and choose stronger words.
This is for you if
Your ideas feel scattered or stale.
You want to rediscover what genuinely fascinates you instead of chasing what you think you should write.
This is for you if
Big challenges make you quit before you begin.
You want seven small wins, not more pressure. Most challenges take less time than one TV episode.

Seven days. Seven challenges!

DAY 1
L
Log Off
“Turn off the Radio.”
Turn off social media for one day. Use 15 minutes of the attention you reclaim to read or write.
DAY 2
E
Explore Great Books
“Read all the good books you can, and avoid nearly all magazines.”
Read a book you already love for 20 minutes. Study the creative decisions.
DAY 3
G
Give Words a Voice
“Always write (and read) with the ear, not the eye.”
Read one page of your work aloud, mark every stumble, then record it and listen back.
DAY 4
E
Explore Your Interests
“Write about what really interests you, whether it is real things or imaginary things, and nothing else.”
List five stories you return to, find their shared thread, and follow it into 15 minutes of writing.
DAY 5
N
Nail the Meaning
“Take great pains to be clear.”
Read a passage like a stranger would and repair every place a reader could get lost.
DAY 6
D
Don't Throw It Away
“When you give up a bit of work don’t (unless it is hopelessly bad) throw it away. Put it in a drawer.”
Nuff said.
DAY 7
S
Study Your Words
“Be sure you know the meaning (or meanings) of every word you use.”
Circle five words from the week. Check each one, then keep it or choose a better one.

What changes by the end of the week

The goal isn’t seven checked boxes. It’s a more deliberate way of working with your attention, ideas, and words.
Outcome 01
A repeatable focus ritual
You’ll know how to create a short pocket of attention instead of waiting for the perfect writing day.
Outcome 02
A better editing ear
You’ll have a simple read-aloud process for catching awkward rhythm and unclear sentences.
Outcome 03
A clearer creative compass
You’ll identify the interests and story patterns that keep pulling you back for a reason.
Outcome 04
A reason to save unfinished work
You’ll stop treating every abandoned draft as failure and preserve its best possibilities.

Created inside a writers’ community

Written by LegendFiction founder Dominic de Souza

Dominic de Souza is a novelist, brand strategist, and community builder whose work sits at the meeting point of story, faith, science, and history. Born in New Zealand, raised in Australia, and educated in Fiji and France, he finished his first novel at thirteen.
He later built a long career in marketing and design and founded LegendFiction, a community for storytellers who treat fiction as vocation.
His books and interviews explore fantasy, Tolkien’s idea of sub-creation, Catholic imagination, myth, worldbuilding, branding, and the strange questions that emerge when old stories meet modern science.

Your story deserves your attention.

C.S. Lewis gave writers the principles. Now you get seven days to put them into practice.
Seven days. Seven missions. Start with Day One.
