How Lord of the Rings & the Odyssey inspired historical novels, with Scott Gates

ABOUT Scott Gates
Scott read Lord of the Rings while hiking the Appalachian Trail. That grounded him in the details and immediacy of feeling what the Fellowship felt. His fascination with Civil War-era life, and how we all work through our own Odyssey of experiences, impelled him to write ‘Hard Road South.’

Scott is the author of ‘Hard Road South’, historical fiction published by Blue Ink Press. His second novel, “Gone, the Redeemer,” will be released in June. Scott grew up in Montgomery, Alabama, and currently lives in North Carolina with his wife and three kids. He converted to Catholicism in 2009 and is learning more about the faith every day.

ABOUT THIS SHOW: Silhouettes of the Truth
The show about Catholic fiction for ordinary, modern authors! We talk creed, craft, and co-creation, rooted in grit, grace, gods, and dragons. Let’s inspire your faith and your fiction!

We’re inspired by the words of St Basil to see the silhouettes of the truth’ in secular literature. In crafting fiction, we are also haunted by and hunting these ‘silhouettes’ of truth, beauty, and goodness that are dimly seen through stories. Human beings and human stories are full of flaws and fascination. As authors, we are drawn to dramatize the realities of the spiritual, mystical, and mortal life.

I listened to this interview and marveled at the similarities Scott Gates and I share as authors. I am a Catholic convert as well who wrote a historical fiction novel that took eight years to finish. Life gets in the way of creativity sometimes. My book is titled Guiding Missal – Fifty Years. Three Generations of Military Men. One Spirited Prayer Book. I did two years of in-depth research, mostly because it didn’t start out to be a book. I was trying to re-create my father-in-law’s military history after he died. Turns out, I discovered he was a bona fide hero in WWII, particularly during the Battle of the Bulge. The writing journey was God-fueled from beginning to end. Six months after Guiding Missal was published it won a silver medal by the Military Writers Society of America. I felt all my efforts were validated.
I congratulate Scott M. Gates for all his successes and hope that I can follow in his footsteps. I’d love the chance of an interview to tell my story.
