Plan Your Novel: Prepare to Entice Readers, An Online Workshop with Katelin Cummins

Apr 13, 2023 | Academy, Latest

When you finish and publish your novel, who is going to read it? Have you thought about why they will want to read it and what do you want them to get out of it?

If you intend to publish, then your novel is a product that you will sell to readers. It’s essential to consider where and how your novel will sit in the marketplace among other similar books.

Before you even start writing, begin with the end in mind. Imagine your work as a finished book on a bookstore shelf. Writing for a particular future reader can help you effectively shape the story you want to tell.

This 90-minute workshop shares tips for

  • Choosing a working title and genre
  • Getting to know your ideal reader
  • Working on a draft of your back cover copy

You will be invited to share about and discuss your stories in the group and receive coaching on your work.

This workshop uses steps four through seven of The Blueprint for a Book by Jennie Nash, founder of Author Accelerator. The complete Blueprint outlines fourteen steps to plan your novel from the inside out. (You do not need to have completed the earlier Blueprint steps to attend this workshop and find it useful.)

Testimonials from Katelin’s previous workshop

“I came into this workshop filled with self-doubts about my novel. But Katelin’s guidance, encouraging feedback, and astute questions helped dispel my doubts and left me feeling greater confidence in the story I wanted to tell. I would recommend Katelin’s workshops to writers at any level.” – Thomas Salerno

“I’ve always had a hard time summarizing the point of my stories without going into a lot of detail. This workshop was helpful not only in getting to that core point, but also in sharing with others and seeing how different our stories are. Also, the day after I took this workshop, someone in my critique group asked what the main point of my story was. The timing could not have been better!” – Zephyr Thomas
