Mar 15, 2022 | Announcements, Latest

Update 3/17/2022

While not all stories make it into the finalist place, all 10 author stories, and 3 teen stories, will be published in the first issue of Pennon. Which means no matter what art you enter, it has a high chance of being used!

Plus: the deadline is extended to March 27!

See the entries so far!

Are you an illustrator or an artist? Do you enjoy creating digital art, or pencil sketches, or painting? Are you a 13+ Catholic artist who lives anywhere in the world?

We have a fairy tale cover art challenge for you!

Right now, CatholicAuthor is in the judging phase of our Fairy Tale contest. Pretty soon, we’ll be announcing the winners. The winners will be featured in a beautiful, professionally-designed, printable journal that families can purchase and ship to their homes.

Here’s where you come in!

We would like to partner with you – and showcase your talent. Instead of using stock photos to illustrate the Journal, we would like to feature your art.

We hope that it creates an exciting way for you to get known as an artist, and start working on real projects!

The best entry will be featured on the  cover of Pennon, our printable journal!

Here’s how it works

Check out the lineup of Round 1 stories from this contest. Decide on the story you’d like to illustrate.

Then comment on this post your selection.

Then, work your magic in creating your piece of art! Up to 2 pieces of art are permitted.

Then submit it for review!

Deadline

Submit your art before or by March 23 March 27 2022 to participate in this cover challenge.

Who can enter?

  • Ages 13+
  • Catholic artist
  • Anywhere in the world

How to submit your artwork

  1. Create a free profile in the CatholicAuthor Journal.
  2. Create your artist listing
  3. Create your artwork listing – and upload your artwork! You can even share work in progress.

Done! You’ve started your artwork portfolio!

How judging works

We are looking for visually striking and imaginative fairy tale art.

All entries must relate to a story from the contest, and should focus on a specific theme or moment from the story.

The quality of the art must be competent to advanced – demonstrating an ability to handle light and shadow, perspective, proportionality, and use of your selected medium.

Art styles

You can submit digital art, charcoal, pencil sketches, pastels… all are welcome!

While all entries will be public, only the best will be selected for use in the printable journal, Pennon.

Scan your pictures in high quality to upload to your art listing. Ensure that it is clear and flat, not at an angle or with shadows. Everyone will be able to see your art, and share feedback and comments.

Permission & Licenses

In submitting your art to the CatholicAuthor cover challenge, you retain the rights to your artwork, and the freedom to do with it whatever you will, including selling it! You are granting the CatholicAuthor team a non-revocable, universal, royalty-free license to use, edit and remix your art for layout and promotional purposes. You will be credited each time the artwork is used.

I chose the “The little princess and the Great Dragon”.

It would be nice if more time was given for creating the art. You would probably get better quality pieces that way.

Great point, Kris! We’ve re-evaluated… and added a whole extra week for art entries. Thanks for your interest, and for chiming in!

    Hi there!
I don’t know what to do with starting my artist listing. Is there somewhere I need to go to start it?
    Thank you!
